What is a Data Storage Converter?

A data storage converter translates values between units of digital information: bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes. There are two standards: decimal (SI), where 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, used by hard drive manufacturers; and binary (IEC), where 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, used by operating systems. This tool supports both.

How to Use Data Storage Converter

  1. Choose a prefix standard: Decimal (SI) or Binary (IEC).
  2. Type a value into any unit field.
  3. All other units update instantly.
  4. Use the quick example buttons to start from common sizes.
Decimal vs Binary Prefixes ▾
Example
Input 1 GB
Output 1,000 MB / 1,000,000 KB / 0.001 TB
Common Use Cases
  • Comparing advertised drive sizes to OS-reported sizes
  • Cloud storage and bandwidth planning
  • Converting network transfer speeds (Mbps to MB/s)
  • Software and database sizing
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between KB and KiB?

KB (kilobyte) is 1,000 bytes in the SI/decimal system used by storage manufacturers. KiB (kibibyte) is 1,024 bytes in the binary/IEC system used by operating systems. This is why a "500 GB" hard drive shows as ~465 GB in Windows.

How many bytes are in a gigabyte?

In the decimal (SI) system: 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. In the binary (IEC) system: 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes.

What is a petabyte?

A petabyte (PB) is 1,000 terabytes or 10^15 bytes in decimal. It is used to measure data centre and cloud storage capacities.

Why does my hard drive show less space than advertised?

Manufacturers use decimal (1 GB = 10^9 bytes), but operating systems measure in binary (1 GiB = 2^30 bytes). A 1 TB drive contains ~931 GiB as reported by your OS.
